Video Poker Glossary
Video poker is a great game and one in which a knowledgeable player can greatly reduce the house's edge. Play your cards right and you might just take some of the casino's money for yourself. This online video poker glossary will help you become familiar with common terms used in this game.
Ace High:
A poker hand in which the highest card is an ace.
Action:
The amount of money in play during a hand or during a session of play.
Boat:
A boat, sometimes called a full boat, is a slang term used to describe a full house.
Bullet:
A slang term for an ace.
Cowboy:
A slang term for a king.
Credit:
A betting unit. On a one dollar machine, one dollar would equal one credit. On a $.25 machine $1 would equal four credits. You can bet anywhere from one credit to five credits on a video poker machine.
Deal Button:
Pushing this button starts the game by giving you a fresh set of five cards.
Deuce:
A two.
Deuces Wild:
A video poker variation in which all of the 2's in the deck are wild.
Drawing Hand:
A hand that needs additional cards in order to improve.
Face Card:
A King, Queen or Jack.
Fishhooks:
Slang term for Jacks.
Flash Video Poker Games:
Video poker games that can be played without downloading software.
Flush:
Five cards of the same suit, either hearts, diamonds, clubs or spades.
Four of a Kind:
Four cards of equal value.
Four to a Flush:
Four cards of the same suit. Five cards of the same suit are required to complete the flush.
Four to a Straight:
Four cards in sequential order. Five cards in sequential order are required to complete a straight.
Full House:
Three of a kind and a pair in the same hand.
Full Pay:
This refers to the machines that offer the best payouts. In Jacks or Better a full pay machine is also referred to as a 9/6 machine because a full house pays off at 9 to 1 and a flush it pays off at 6 to 1 on these machines.
Gut Shot Straight Draw:
This is a slang term that refers to a straight that can only be completed with one card because the required card is in the middle of the sequence. For example, if you were holding a 10, Jack, King, and Ace this would be considered a gut shot straight draw because the only card that can complete your straight is in the middle of the sequence, in this case a queen.
Inside Straight Draw:
The same as gut shot straight draw.
Jacks or Better:
One of the most popular variations of video poker in which a pair of jacks or better is required to receive a payout.
Joker:
An extra card that can be added to the deck, normally used as a wildcard.
Kicker:
The highest unpaired card in a poker hand.
Outside Straight Draw:
A sequential series of cards in which two different card values would complete the straight. For example, if you held a 10, Jack, Queen, and King, receiving either a 9 or an Ace would give you the straight.
Paint:
A slang term that refers to face cards.
Pair:
Two cards of equal value.
Pat Hand:
A strong starting hand that does not require drawing additional cards to improve the hand.
Payout Schedule:
A chart showing the winning hands and how much each hand will pay.
Progressive Video Poker:
A video poker machine that has a continually growing jackpot until someone eventually wins the jackpot for getting a specific hand, usually a royal flush.
Set:
A slang term for a three of a kind.
Straight:
Five cards in sequential order.
Straight Flush:
Five cards of the same suit that are also in sequential order.
Suited:
Refers to multiple cards of the same suit.
Three of a Kind:
Three cards of equal value.
Two Pair:
Two sets of two cards of equal value.
Wildcard:
A card that may be substituted for any other card in the deck.
