“Brotha D”, the poker playing Hip Hop star from New Zealand has won the PokerStars Australia New Zealand Poker Tour Darwin Main Event 2010. Brotha D, real name Danny Leaoasavaii, won $57,000 after defeating over 100 players across the space of four days.

Amazingly “Brotha D” has only been playing poker for the past three years, and in September won NZD$170,000 at the APPT in Auckland after defeating a field of 218 players. “Brotha D’s” win in Darwin has made him the first poker player to triumph in both the ANZPT and APPT. He had qualified for the Darwin tournament by winning a celebrity poker event.

When it came down to the final table “Brotha D” swiftly knocked out the first two players, Bruno Portaro who took away $6,500 and Trevor Potts who finished with $8,000.

Next came Billy “The Croc” Argyros who went out with $10,000, followed by Anthony Flanagan ($12,000) who was dispatched by “Brotha D” who held pocket 5’s.

Shortly afterwards Brotha D was facing a one-on-one heads-up battle against Luke Edwards. Edwards’s previous best effort saw him take 11th position (and $5,690) in the APPT Main Event – No Limit Hold’em in September. The battle between Edwards and Brotha D was an intense affair with both players having the opportunity to take the title on several occasions but in the end Brotha D was victorious and came away with the title.
