Domanic Kay won the Genting Poker Players event at the Star City Casino in Birmingham over the weekend. There were 302 poker players involved in the competition and they added a further £10,000 to the £150 buy-in event’s prize pool.

The final head to head saw professional poker player Kay chop the final prize money with fellow contestant John Exley. The pair agreed to play out the match for the trophy and a £1,300 package for a prestigious place at the Palm Beach Big Game in December.

When the final cards were played out Kay won the trophy, Palm Beach package and £12,000, while Exley came away with a very respectable £10,910 in prize money.

Kay, commenting on his win, said, “It means a lot, in fact I am blown away.” He admitted that he played a lot online and had won some smaller live competitions, taking home a couple of hundred pounds, but winning the Poker Players Championship was incredible. Talking about the chop with Exley, Kay said that he didn’t mind doing a deal on the money, but really wanted the trophy and the seat at the Palm Beach event. “As a kid, I won a few trophies at sports days, but nothing as big as this.”

The event shows how well live poker is taking off in Britain at the moment, with popularity growing at competitions like PokerStars UKIPT tournaments, the IPO events and Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn competitions.
