Despite all the hoorrah about Daniel Negreanu making the final table of the EPT poker tournament in Vienna and how the European title is one still to elude him, it was a young gun from German, Michael Eiler who took the title and huge €700,000 first prize.

Eiler came through a tough table and well deserved his win coming up against the likes of Negreanu and Martin Hrugby. The young German actually qualified for the event by winning through on one of PokerStars satellite events so proves once more how profitable the pre-tournament games can be.

To make the matter tougher for himself Eiler suffered a heavy two million loss in chips at the end of Day 4’s play to leave him severely short stacked at the start of the final day and poker pundits were predicting he would have a tough day of it. However, he stuck to the job in hand and with only his 2,160,000 played with skill and guile to take the title down.

The safe bets were on Negreanu, with his pro pedigree who went into the final day as chip leader but eventually hit the rails in fourth place, with the final face off between Eiler and Hrugby. The final results from Vienna were Eiler, Rugby (470,000), Konstantinos Nanos (265,000) in third, Negreanu (175,000) takes fourth, with Luca Cainelli (140,000) in fifth. Before this Andreas Wiese (105,000) in sixth, Matthias Lotze (76,000) eighth and the first to hit the rails in ninth was Bruno Lanais (60,000).
