Murray Reaches Quarter Finals in Australian Open
Andy Murray raced through to the quarter finals in impressive style beating Jergen Melzer 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 making it clear to those left in the competition that he is a serious contender. Murray who lost last year’s competition in the final to Roger Federer, had a storming match and finished the job off in an hour and 44 minutes. Melzer, seeded eleventh, was not at all happy with himself and spent much of the match screaming at himself and throwing his racket around.
Bookmakers gave Murray a 1/8 chance of taking the match and Murray himself admitted that he was wary of a resurgent Melzer, saw odds of 9/2 on the Austrian. Despite the confidence in Melzer’s ability to up set the formbook, it was a powerful performance from Murray that put Melzer out. Murray has been playing some of his best tennis of the last year and looking a serious bet for the finals.
Murray managed to serve up 13 aces to end Melzer’s run in the Rod Laver Arena, a venue he admits to being very fond of, saying after his last round victory he would happily play all his tournaments there. The next challenge for Murray if he is to take the title is the Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov who will be no walk over having smashed out fourth seed Robin Soderling 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
