Bookmakers the world over will breathe a sigh of relief as news of sports betting fans favourite octopus’s death was announced yesterday. The Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany, where Paul lived said that he died naturally in his sleep Monday night.

Paul “the psychic” Octopus sprung to fame during this year’s football World Cup in South Africa when he became famous for predicting results of the competition. The octopus will be missed by many sports fans that placed bets based on his advice, which was often accurate.

He received a number of death threats when he made some of his now well-known predictions, such as the result of the Germany Uruguay games. He correctly predicted all of the German teams results, including their eventual exit from the tournament. There was a host of promotional material produced with his name on, he has his own Facebook page and even a low budget film was made about him.

Paul’s betting predictions were conducted by him choosing between two food containers with a flag on top representing the countries involved in the competitions. Before his sad demise, one of his last predictions was to say that the winners for hosting the 2018 World Cup would be England. Will bookmakers be shortening the odds based on the octopus’s vision?

The chances of a seven match correct prediction are calculated at 1/256 in the German matches against Australia, Serbia, Ghana, England, Argentina, Spain and Uruguay, he also correctly choose Spain in the final against the Netherlands.
