Sports Betting Riding on Golf

The next great sporting event worth a flutter starts this weekend in South Wales. The Ryder Cup sees the Americans cross the Atlantic in an attempt to retain their hold on the competition. History and home advantage however see the European team placed as favourites to once again recapture the much valued golf prize.

As the teams settle into their rooms at the massive Celtic Manor complex just outside Newport the question on all gambling pundit lips is will the Europeans choke, can the Americans gel and play as a team and will the notorious wet Welsh weather have any bearing on the result.

Opening odds of 13/8 in favour of the Europeans have slipped since a huge £100,000 bet was placed on the Americans to win. Belief in Corey Pavin’s team coming out winners has led Ladbrokes to slash the odds to 7/4 in Europe’s favour. Tiger Woods is also attracting betting interest and odds of 8/1 on him being the top scorer has had punters putting money on him having put his troubles behind him.

Spokesman for Ladbrokes, David Williams said, “The Ryder Cup always brings out the heavyweight money, and the opening gambit has been fired in favour of the Americans.”

Euro money is being firmly placed on Rory McIlroy at 5/1 that he’ll top the leader board come Sunday, with Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood being given odds of 6/1 apiece. After Woods, the American betting is supporting Steve Stickler 11/2 and Phil Mickleson 6/1.

All will be revealed by the end of the weekend.
