Mclaren Racing CEO Martin Whitmarsh has said he believes that if his team can pull of a strong performance at this weekend’s Brazillian Grand Prix in Interlagos then their dreams of glory in the world championship can be kept alive.

“I see no reason why we can’t be competitive and win in Brazil, but we are in a fierce championship at the moment, and Ferrari and red Bull won’t stand still.

“They will be doing everything they can to win and no-one can predict which guy is going to be quicker round Interlagos, which is great.”

Whitmarsh went on to say that the team intends to go into the Grand Prix with the aim of winning, ideally with a one-two finish for teammates Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. However, Whitmarsh indicated that if needed, Button - who is trailing 42 points behind leader Fernando Alonso - might have to make way for Hamilton to come through. Hamilton is just 21 points behind and still in with a chance of taking the Drivers Championship.

Whitmarsh believes that Button will support his teammate as much as possible; “ There’s a good relationship between the two drivers. I’m sure they are going to co-operate with each other. I think Jensen is a remarkably composed, mature thinking driver. He should go there with the attitude that he should be trying to seek to win the race and, during the course of the weekend, I’m sure he will do everything he can to fulfil the ambitions of the team”.

888sport are currently offering odds of 8/1 for McLaren to win the Constructors Championship with Red Bull on 1/10 and Ferrari at 16/1.
